Short tracks abound in 2020 schedules for Xfinity and Gander Outdoor Trucks

NASCAR officially unveiled the 2020 schedules for both the Xfinity and Gander Outdoors Truck Series on Wednesday.

Perhaps the most interesting nugget will be all three of NASCAR’s top national tours holding the penultimate race of the season—and the Championship 4 cut-off event—at Martinsville Speedway, the oldest track on the circuit.

The Gander Outdoors Truck Series race will be held on Oct. 30 under the lights at The Paperclip, while the Xfinity Series returns the half-miler after a three-year absence.

“Last week I was able to answer the most popular question I get, which is about a night race and this week I get to answer the second most popular question we get, ‘When will you bring back the Xfinity Series,’” Martinsville Speedway President Clay Campbell said. “I remember that series fondly from their time here in the past and fans will now be able to see drivers from all three national touring series at Martinsville Speedway over one weekend, which I know they will enjoy.”

The truck series returns to Richmond Raceway on April 18.  The NGOTS hasn't competed at the .75-mile oval since 2005. Richmond was one of the original tracks on the truck schedule when the series debuted in 1995.

“Since I came to Richmond in 2011, I have been asked one question more than any other, ‘When are the trucks coming back,’” said Richmond President Dennis Bickmeier. “We have actively pursued a NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series race for years, so we look forward to welcoming the Gander Trucks back home to Richmond next spring.”

Both series will wrap up the season at ISM Raceway along with the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series the first weekend of November. The tours will also join Cup for the inaugural doubleheader at Pocono Raceway on the last weekend in June. Gateway Motorsports Park will now host the trucks Playoff opener on Aug. 21.

“The NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series were both built on short track racing, and it is important that short tracks remain a prominent part of our series schedules,” said Ben Kennedy, NASCAR managing director of racing operations and international development.

“We returned to our roots in many ways with today’s announcement. Martinsville and Richmond were part of the original Xfinity and Gander Trucks schedules, and we’re excited for their return as part of a strong overall slate.”

Perhaps the most popular news to come out of the schedule announcement is NASCAR filling the Cup and Xfinity void left created during NBCSports’ two-week departure to cover the 2020 Olympics. The Gander Outdoor Truck Series should quench the thirst for racing with two short tracks—Eldora Speedway on Thursday, July 30 and Iowa Speedway on August 1.
