In 1998, I was doing a lot of writing for a lot of different magazines, one of which was Racing Milestones, a mag out of Virginia that primarily covered NASCAR. I wrote four different articles for them on "Rising Stars," prospective big time drivers. When the ASA came to I-70 Speedway that year, I was asked to interview Adam Petty in his first year of professional racing for an article. So - I went there to do just that.. . . read more

Well, it’s official now. Tony George has “resigned” as President and CEO of the Hulman Family of Corporations, including the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy Racing League. The man who was perhaps the most polarizing figure in the world of big-time motorsports is now toothless and reduced to being the owner of a struggling one-car team in the Indy Racing League (Vision Racing). George’s nearly 20 year reign at the head of IMS will be dissected for years to come, or at least as long as it takes to repair the damage he caused.. . . read more

Got a couple of interesting press releases last week. The first concerned Juan Pitta, a late model driver who is part of NASCAR's "Drive for Diversity" class of 2009, who scored his second late model feature win in a row at All American Speedway, in Roseville, CA. The win was said to be the 30th for D4D participants in the six years of the program.. . . read more

Well, the Jeremy Mayfield drug testing controversy has occupied news outlets, forum boards, blogs, and other NASCAR oriented sites over the last few weeks. I've held off from posting my thoughts, because I think there is a lot that the general public does not know - and that the reporters don't know, either. With a hearing scheduled Wednesday, much of that information is likely to become public record. Still, I have some thoughts that I want to get on record, and well, this is my place to do it. For those who don't know the sequence of events, here is a quick summary:. . . read more

Well, gang, it's about time for the best weekend of the year for racers and fans - Memorial Day Weekend. Although it's still early in the season, no other weekend is as packed with races of all different types, both locally and nationally, as Memorial Day weekend. I decided a few years ago that Memorial Day Weekend is proof that God loves racing people and wants us to be happy. If you can't find what you like on this weekend, you're not trying.. . . read more

Note - this is something I thought I'd do from time to time. As part of a research project, I've been gathering a huge amount of clippings of old area races to use as background material. But some of these stories deserve to be repeated, and why not here? If you like this stuff, let me know - if it's in any way popular, I'll probably do about one of these a week.. . . read more

It's become something of an excuse for everything that goes bad in racing. It's called "Internet negativity," and you see racers, fans, and promoters blaming it - and each other - for low crowd counts, low car counts, disputes between racers, etc. But is that really what the problem is? I'm not so sure, and I've been watching Net rumors and other gossip for a long time. I've even been in the middle of it.. . . read more

First of all - a disclaimer. Most of my posts have a pretty well-defined purpose; a beginning, a middle, and an end. They're like a short trip with GPS guidance. Think of this one more like a college road trip with your buddies, where you're just hoping to pool enough gas money to get home. But - hopefully - at one of our stops, we'll find a good idea.. . . read more

I have some great news for everyone who disagreed with my basic theory regarding rules enforcement. To put it briefly, my contention is that Rules Enforcement = more cars and fans; no Rules Enforcement = less cars and fans. We now have a perfect test case - Thunder Hill Speedway.. . . read more

Don't look now, but there's a new epidemic facing racing in our area, and it appears to frighten some racers (and journalists) more than the Swine Flu, the Bubonic Plague, and a bad case of the crabs - all put together. It's called "Rules Enforcement," and based on the events at local tracks, the gossip on forums, and the talk on Racinboys, it's spreading.. . . read more

Well, if you're looking for controversy, the A-Modified class in this area is a good place to find it. For those who need to be caught up to speed (perhaps you've been vacationing in sunny Yemen for the last few weeks), Inthepits.net broke a story about how some Modified builders were raising the right front frame rail (the stock clip section, approximately 3 to 3-1/2") on their cars. Apparently, this all stemmed from a loose lipped racer at a racing banquet who didn't realize that he was speaking with an inspector present. A little checking by the inspector followed, and sure enough, a lot of the fast cars at his track were running this setup.. . . read more

Well, since economic forecasts are all the rage, I thought it would be appropriate to throw my own hat in the ring. Since my main interest is the racing world, my forecast will deal with the specific effects of the 2009 economy on the racing world, both nationally and within our own home region. So, without further ado, let's dive right in.. . . read more
