Memories

Posted by Terry Bivins at 05:44:54 AM

I know all  racing drivers, car owners and fans have some special racing memories. When suffering through  a Midwest winter, memories of seasons past and expectations of the upcoming season is about all there is to B.S about. Since I have re-entered the great sport of racing and have met some new racing friends and re-newed some old friendships a lot of memories have come to mind.  So I am going to list a few of many in this post.

I remember

my first race car, 1955 ford we bought at a used car lot. put in some pipe roll bars, removed the glass, and went racing with the tires that came on it.

racing at a little bull-pen called riverside, 1/4 mile dirt, destroyed a 56 Chevy on the front stretch wall

sponsor buying a 57 ford race car at Lakeside after the feature race to replace the 56 Chevy, purchase price $900

rolling a 55 Chevy at Olympic Stadium 4 laps into the main, landed on its wheels, re-started last and won the only main I ever raced there.

going to a dirt race in Iowa and driving through a 1/4 mile of 8 ft. high corn to get to the track

winning my first championship at Lakeside

running my dirt car at I-70 when it first opened, it wasn't very fast

getting my first pavement car, it was fast

losing 5 motors by mid-season and being so broke I was going to quit, friends and family chipped in the money to build me one more  motor that stayed together

taking out 80 ft. of the wall at I-70, end flipping 6 times and landing 300 ft outside the track just 50 ft from a pond, throttle stuck on a brand new car Duane Isaacs had built

winning a 300 lapper at Rolla Mo. and having to chase down Ralph Starr  to get my money, he left the track with all of the money before the race was over.

going to Dells Speedway in Wisconsin, backing it into the wall in hot laps, hooked a chain around a stump in the infield and to the rear frame of the car, backed up to the stump and hammered it, frame was close enough to race, tied the fuel cell in with our belts and wire, won the 75 lapper and got the $1000.

lapped car wrecking me leading a 100 lapper at Ft. Smith Arkansas by a half a lap just 5 laps from the end of the race, and being knocked out for the first time in a race car, I was pinned in the car and and they hooked it up to two wreckers and pulled it apart far enough to get me out

  winning my championship at I-70

the long standing feud that Dave Wall and I had, put a lot of fans in the stands though, so I guess it was good for racing. Dave was a good driver and a nice guy, he just never liked me very much.

always trying to find sponsor help to keep on racing

pulling my car through the tunnel at Daytona and hoping I was going to make the race, it was totally awesome to see that track for the first time after hearing about it for years

the thrill of racing in the draft with the drivers in Nascar

being in the garage area with A.J Foyts car right next to mine

passing the rookie test at Daytona

winning $11,000 for my 8th place finish, told them I did not want a check and having to hang around an extra day till Nascar got me the cash, they told me the check was good, but I wanted the cash

hitting the wall head on at Darlington after blowing a motor going into turn 3 so hard that I kept asking Claudia how I wrecked at Springfield Mo. Concussion really had me goofy for a couple of days, also was knocked out here for the second time

There I've shared a few of the many good and some not so good memories of my racing years. I hope you enjoy reading them.

I am hoping to make a few more good memories before I have to quit racing for the final time.

Terry, Nice article as I always like the memories of memory lane, but as a youth I asscociate you most with a memory unwritten about, and that is. The old Freddy Whisler and Terry Bivins races at I-70.

Terry, enjoyed the article. I think that car you destroyed at Riverside ended up in a shed at the back of our property. Before he cut off the steering wheel, Buz and I drove it to many "victories"!

Thanks a lot, without my racing memories it would be a little boring to look back.
