Sorry It's Been So Long! I've Discovered That CMS Rules!

Posted by Michael Jones at 02:50:02 AM

Whew! Sorry it's been so long, have had a ton of stuff going on lately with graduating and some other personal things, but seems like it's all coming to a rest finally and I can sit back and enjoy a summer of racing   -  on the dirt of course ;).

Headed out to CMS last night. Had their 4 regular classes turning laps around the quick bullring with the addition of the SMRS Midgets. I believe the car counts were something like this...

- 25 SMRS Midgets
- 18 Street Stocks
- 33 'B' Modifieds
- 22 ULMA Late Models
- 38 'A' Modifieds

The pits were absolutely jam PACKED with race cars and haulers, definitely a great sight to see, wonder if the ticks took advantage of this? Little devils mighta been so happy they didn't know what to do with themselves.

Anyways it was great to see open wheeled cars back at CMS. Yes I realize the 'B' and Mighty Modifieds are open wheeled type cars but I'm a huge fan of the traditional open wheel cars, the midgets and sprint cars, especially when the 'crutch', also known as the top wing, is taken off of them. Track conditions were unnormally dry, something you will very, very rarely see at CMS and I was sort of disappointed to see that because the SMRS Midgets would surely have put on a side-by-side thriller had they been given the opportunity too. But hey, I've never been much of a complainer and my kudos goes out to Mr.Walls and grew for getting the track ready to race at all because it made my day to wake up and check the internet to see that CMS was racing.

Kudos goes out to the ULMA Late Models for a caution free 'A' Main, something we didn't see last week, but notably the week before... second time in three weeks for those boys with no yellows, great job! Bob King again led the way, this time relativel unchallenged once he took the pace-setting position.

Perhaps the best race of the night took place in the Miiiiiighty Modifieds 'A' Main. Although track conditions weren't favorable to much passing in the other classes, Matt Johnson in the 5J car and the No. 222 machine piloted by Dustin Boney decided to take matters into their own hands.

Now now now -- I'm not the type of writer to overlook some controversy, in fact I thrive on it like a shark on blood. In the early on going, Boney was involved in accident with multi-time CMS feature winner Tim Karrick. From my perspective (which wasn't the best), it appeared like Boney decided to move Karrick on out of the way, while overtaking the second place position on the race track. But, taking into consideration track conditions and my crappy view of the whole ordeal, only Mr. Boney knows what happened, and hey, what happened 17 laps later was pretty damn entertaining.

17 Laps Later..... I bet you think Karrick catches back up and spins out Boney don't ya? Nope, sorry, not 'that' definition of entertaining, sorry if I led ya on, LOL. It appears as if no one had anything for the Johnson in the 5J and his lowside speed, until Boney finds some grip up on the high side and pulls right up next to him for a handful of thrilling side-by-side circuits.

Boney eventually made the pass flying down the back straightaway, only to see the dreaded yellow lights blink over-and-over on the track safety lights. However, to my surprise, lead CMS scorer Karen Darling said a lap WAS indeed completed after Boney took over first so he was allowed to stay there. Ah hell, I'm not gonna lie, I thought it was over, Boney looked fast before the caution and I thought it was over.

As the caution flag flew, I couldn't help but think to myself what happened last week to the No. 1K Skyrocket of Tim Karrick, a mistake that cost him the win and a hefty $2,000 paycheck from Earl Walls. Hmm.. better not think that, might jinx the poor guy in the 222 car.

Doh! On the restart Boney bobbles and Johnson capitalizes by sliding underneath and taking back the lead that he wouldn't give back up as he took the checkered flag. Two weeks in a row at CMS it's come down to the last lap.

I'm tellin' ya from first hand experience, if you find yourself bored on Saturday nights.. whether you're sitting at home, have another hobby besides racing or your at another track, you've got to make your way to Central Missouri Speedway at least once to see the excitement. If your a modified fan and you haven't been yet, I'm not sure what you're thinking. They call 'em the Mighty Modifieds for a reason down there, they straight get after it!

Before I end this week's novel, gotta give more kudos out.. this time to my good friend Chris Schofield out of Raymore, MO for his first ever top five in any type of race car. This is Chris' first season as a race car driver and he's piloting a MOLS Lightning Sprint full-time. He captured a fifth place finish at the Toyota Open Wheel Special at the I-70 Dirt Track on Memorial Day, congrats bud!

Speaking of MOLS, if you haven't checked them out, please do so! Whether you're a fan looking for some fast cars to watch or you're an interested car driver or owner, you won't find a cheaper way to go fast! These motorcycle powered mini-sprints are absolute ROCKETS in every definition of the word! A lot of people don't know much about these type of race cars but they could sure use more cars on the track. There are tons of used lightning sprints for sale out there from prices ranging from $5-$7,000 for some good fast cars that'll get you going in a hurry. If you're interested, check out their respective website at www.molsracing.com or e-mail Bob Douglas, the owner and founder of MOLS at bobdouglasmols@mindspring.com . TRUST ME, he'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Over and out!

Michael,

Glad to see you are back to blogging. Your posts are always very entertaining and descriptive. I agree with you, it was a good night of racing at CMS. And I'm not sure they could have gotten one more car into the pits. It was packed!
Thanks for the kudo's too.
Chris

Michael, Thanks for your comments. All the officials at CMS try every week to put on the best show that we possibly can. Some time we run into the rain drenched track and try to work it the best we can and at times it ends up like that. But believe me Earl trys every week to get the track in the best shape possible. We all like the tacky track much better. Considering the car count I thought we did a good job in getting things ran as quickly as possible. I think we have a pretty good idea as to how many race cars we can get into those pits now. Every body did a good job. All in all I believe everyone enjoyed a good night at the races. Thanks.
Karen Darling
