Racing is the very best sport

Posted by Terry Bivins at 02:58:39 PM

Hello, been so busy patching up the car after crashes and trying to get it work well I have not thought about writing a new story. I'm not much of a writer anyway. But I've been thinking about what a great sport racing is for drivers and fans and crewmen. I don't think a lot of folks realize how close the racing community is. With the terrible injuries suffered by drivers and cars falling on crewmen and the passing of some dear friends it is wonderful to see how the racing community has pulled together to show their support and say their prayers for the family's and folks that have been hurt. It makes me proud to be a part of such a fine group of people. Racing is an always has been a dangerous sport, we drivers all get banged up from time to time, but it never dampens our love for what we do. So we all crawl in our cars never thinking something bad will happen to us, we firmly believe we will be able to miss the wreck, get out in case of fire, and never will get hurt very bad. That is what makes racers drive their butts off. Nothing has changed in the 30 some years I've been away from the sport.  I and I'm sure drivers still feel the same way.

Racing is the only sport I know of that a fellow competitor will give you a part you need to race even though he knows you might outrun him. We are fiercely competitive on the track but will help each other when help is needed. That also has not changed in the last 30 years. I have made some great new friends since I've returned to the racing community and I will treasure them as I have the friends I made years ago. I would like to thank the racing community for allowing me to come back and treating me so well. I did not know that I had never lost my love of the sport till I strapped myself in a car again. It all came rushing back the first few tentative laps I took at Lakeside late last year.

To me racing always has been the very best sport, to damned short to play basketball anyway.

Truth be told, you're the one the got me to thinking the same thing when I used to see you race at I-70 and Lakeside back in the 70's. Granted I was just a young kid at the time, but since then I never had much of a passion for the stick and ball sports......well not even today.

Anyway, could you comment on your adventures racing down at the Missouri State Fair on the old 1 mile dirt track? How big of a challenge was it driving on that dusty track at Lord knows what speed? I still thought this was the best racing of the year.

The best memory I have is when Marty Robbins drive one of Joe Wallace's Camaro off down into turn 1 about 500 yds too deep and stuck in the guard-rail on his qualifying lap. I never laughed so hard in my life, all the adults around me were giving me some pretty mean looks at the time. Heck the only person I felt sorry for was Joe, he's the one that had to fix it.

I've got some other questions but I'll save them for later.

Cheers,
Kevin
