Dave Chartrand: Racing friend from the beginning

Posted by Kirk Elliott at 09:01:50 AM

40 years ago, I attended my first dirt track race with Dave Chartrand. Throughout High School and years beyond, our group of die-hard race fanatics traveled anywhere we could to watch races, and Dave Chartrand was the most passionate fan of racing I have ever known. He especially loved sprint car racing, and he loved Knoxville.

Dave passed away on Sunday. And now, a flood of memories has taken over. I'm not sure my love of racing would have developed the way it has had I not known Dave Chartrand. He made it cool to go to the races when racing wasn't cool, and for that, I will always be grateful.

Mount Ayr, Iowa is a great racing town, and Dave Chartrand's support is one of the reasons why.

My thoughts and prayers to his mother Kathryn and to his many friends.
