Quickchanges! ! & Canister Shocks ? ?

Posted by Jason Bodenhamer at 10:06:54 PM

THANK YOU, Finally we don't have to mess with those nasty 9" gears in the modifieds.  Thanks to Scott & Kirk for helping to publicize it and thanks to Earl for making 'the call'.  Now I am reading all these confusing posts on canister shocks.  Let me try to shed a little light on these and let you in on who needs them and who has them ! !

This could be a really long, blog but for now there are just a couple points I want to make.  To start, they are NOT a major advantage.  Back not too long ago at Heartland Park when the TORA late models were there, Al Purkey had on the newer M2 canister shocks in the heat race, where Alan Vaughn put a full straightaway on him.  Al came in and switched back to standard twin tube Afco's and went out and passed John Anderson for the win who was on the 'premier' shock in dirt late model racing, Ohlins.  Now I have been reading on the forum where some people are claiming tenths of a second advantage with these, WHATEVER!

Now, do not think for a moment I am trying to get canister shocks legalized for the limited late model class.  I am not.  I just wanted to give everyone some insight on what I have seen and what I know.  Afco makes a gas charged shock with the same bladder and same internal components as the M2's but without the canister.  Now, your own ULMA officials have purchased this shock from me to put on the left rear in front of the housing to create roll steer and limit car 'hike'.  It retails for $499 versus $639 for the canister M2.  So, my point is, how can an actual ULMA official feel that spending $499 is okay but spending $639 is not?   This type of shock is available for all four corners of the car.  So if they dont allow the canisters, I guess the noncanister $499 shock is allowed?

Once again, I don't care what the rule is.  I know that when I run ULMA next year, or any limited late model show anywhere, I will be running your stock, right out-of-box, Afco twin tubes that retail for $139.

I plan on continuing this argument for and against shock rules in the near future.   Thank you again for supporting the new quickchange rule and until next time, keep your shocks on.

I agree with running the cheaper Afco shocks, Like you said on the radio the other day, if you have extra money spend it on TIRES.

Big Steve
