ANSWERS

Numerous questions this past week so time for some answers.

Question 1 - How does C.A.R.B. decide who wins the awards for the banquet?

C.A.R.B. is everyone who is a member of the organization.  If you are a C.A.R.B. member you can help determine the awrd winners by coming to the November 10 meeting at the KCI Marriott and vote.  Per the constitution of the club we open nominations for the special awards at the October General Membership Meeting.  The nominations for the awards come from the general membership.  At the November meeting those members in attendance vote and the winners are announced at the Banquet.  The votes are counted by the President, Vice President, and the Membership Secretary.  Nominations are reopened at the November meeting so if someone you know is deserving of an award and was not nominated at the October meeting you can come nominate and then vote for your deserving party.  Since I am blogging on the Racinboys website let me give you an example of the above.  Kirk was nominated for the Tom Wilson Media Award.  If someone wanted to nominate Scott they could come to the meeting, make the nomination, everyone adds Scott's name to the ballot and then we vote.  Again the winner is announced at the banquet on December 1.  Come to the meeting and check it out, become a member, and then make your voice heard.

Question number 2, Is Lakeside allowing the quick change rearend?  Yes, the rule amendment is "Steel-tube quick change rear ends are allowed. Steel axle tubes only. Minimum ten (10") inch ring gear only; no titanium, no aluminum birdcages, and no wide five hubs. Quick changes are optional, not mandatory".

My phone was ringing like crazy.  Everyone who was wanting quick change rearends was calling voicing their opinion.  Now that we have allowed them some have put pen to paper and made some discoveries in cost and weight and have since changed their tune.  Again they are optional, not mandatory.

Question number 3 is to answer my good friends Terry Bivins, Lloyd Collins, Tom Charles, and Troy Harrison concerning the thread started by Terry about adding spoilers on modifieds.  Lakeside will NOT be allowing spoilers on modifieds.

Quite honestly, Lakeside has walls and too many competitors hit the wall too often bending their race cars.  We have enough debris on the track already we do not need to add the debris of spoilers.  Spoilers also create a safety hazard that Grand National drivers reported to us and the very reason we required a clear Lexan spoiler last year.  Spoilers do not allow drivers to see the drivers ahead of them and thus could be some of the reason the grand nationals crash more than they should.  Additionally, spoilers add cost.

Lloyd for you it is time to become an official, experience that side of racing, you are becoming pretty good at stirring issues from the media side of the house.  You are quickly earning the name "Traylor Junior".   Oh wait that might be in the wind.  Love your opinions though, just could not resist.

Tom Charles, I have called you on numerous issues just to get your opinion.  It is true we have not always seen eye to eye but that is a good thing.  Racing is family and families don't always see eye to eye.  Shoot for that matter I have seen you and Dee not see to eye to eye.  Just as in the past I will always feel I can call and get your  opinion.  You are after all an elder statesman at 50.  We may not always agree but I respect you as an elder stateman and as a competitor.  Same goes for Bobby Layne in this instance and to think you guys are just barely older than me.

Troy, keep your opinions coming.  About 90% percent of the time I completely agree with the thoughts and ideas.  I have even had to defend you on occasion.

Question 4 - Will I run for President of C.A.R.B. again.  The answer is yes.  This past year the constitution was changed to create a nomination committee.  The purpose of this committee is to eliminate the time at the meeting asking those in attendance if they will run for office or the board of directors.  The nominating committee will make their recommendations at the November 10 meeting and the floor will then be open for additional nominations.  Voting for the 2008 Officers and Baord of Directors will occur at the December 8 meeting.  Now that I have covered the logistics lets cover the other issue.

As listed above we grow older every year.  It is time we work on getting younger.  We need to work hard on transitioning to the youth of america.  It is great to see some of the young talent at the race tracks and at the gokart tracks.  Somehow we need to bridge to the youth and get them active in all parts of our sport.  Get them to take the leadership roles.  In my present job of air traffic the FAA made changes that created an environment where the older controllers are retiring.  They are retiring in numbers that the FAA was not ready with replacements.  However, the young kids coming in are a remarkable group of kids.  They learn exceptionally fast.  We can do the same thing in racing.  We have to get younger and allow some of the younger  ideas to become the norm.  The younger generation has been raised understanding computers and how to make them work, some of us are lucky to access this website.  What we need is younger driver, owners, mechanics, officials, C.A.R.B. Officers, etc.  We have to guide them from our experience accept what they have to offer and let them become the leaders of our future.

If I ask Traylor, would that be a compliment? LOL ..I like being an Unofficial Official. Kind of suits me better.

I am glad you mention the kids JD. Since I have been taking photos at Thunderlake, I talk to alot of these kids, some ever so serious and some not so serious, some who do it for fun and some who believe they can get to the big leagues. Believe me there is alot of talent in some of these kids. I speak to them and hope to give them encouragement and help bridge that gap you mention. You mention that 50 mark of elder statesman. I'm only 1 year behind you,Tom and others. These kids I see racing Karts now will be those who will be entertaining us while we are all setting around telling stories cause we are to damn old to do anything else. I have even thought of putting together several drivers to see if they would come over and have a race and speak to the kids about there future racing. I think Tom and Terry had a good time racing the Karts. Maybe I can get that done one of these days.

Hey JD - thanks for giving me a win this offseason, even if it's just a small one!

Oh, and thanks for letting the cat out of the bag that Tom is 50.

Thanks JD......I think? LOL. One thing I have enjoyed about the new age is the fact that we can communicate quickly and get things done. I have always appreciated the fact that you would call and ask my opinion, even though we were not always in agreement. It is how we handle things today that will set up the future, and I certainly have a big investment in the Racing future around here. I attended a meeting just last night for B-Mods in the Topeka area. I'm helping some young racers who are getting started and realize my roll will someday change and I'm ok with that, even though at 50, I still feel like I can get things done......for the most part. I enjoy reading the comments on the net, I enjoy being able too openly discuss issues, and I was only kidding about not inviting you to the meeting.....well, maybe I wasn't, LOL.
I also encourage everyone to get involved with CARB, it is a Great organization. Dee and I spent time with the Club and understand the hard work and sacrifice's that are involved with making the Banquet and other events possible. We are lucky to have a Club like this, and even though my time hasn't allowed me to support the Club as I would like to, I expect that to change in the near future. I like the elder statesmen thing, kinda makes us sound a little .....well.....dignified, haha. I must be getting old, it's 5:40am on a Sunday morning, and I'm on the computer, and yes, I did sleep already. See you all at the Banquet.
