A few notes from Daytona this past week in preparation for the race on Sunday.
Volusia puts on some great races. Jared Landers is a very hot racer in the modifieds. It was great seeing some of our local talent racing even though they had no luck. Sprint car race was awesome and fast. Volusia needs to learn how to reserve seats though.
Learned that Clint Bowyer is a pyro. Seems he had a party several weeks back that included trying to blow up a Nissan by holding the accelarator to the floor. The Nissan never blew it caught fire and all the fire trucks in his county were called to his party.
The Duels were interesting but I still don't like the Top 35 rule. Back when you had to finish in the top 15 made it easy for everyone to know who qualified. The current system needs a mathematician to figure out how the calculation works to determine the lineups.
Just returned from a very good truck race. Chase Austin way to go young man. Chase made numerous great moves during the race, kept up with the draft, had a great truck that would suck up in the draft. This is obvious a learning session for Chase but the crew chief and spotter communications with Chase were easy going, easy to understand, Chase provided great feedback on what the truck was doing including when it got loose with worn tires. To keep everyone relaxed they even discussed what to eat after the race and whether they were going to play cards, text each other, or go to bed when the race was completed.
It was great watching this young man realize a dream he has worked hard to obtain, while the experts (how many of these experts ever ran Daytona) at every turn kept telling him he could not, he was not good enough, etc. Remember, the infamous they better known as the media said the same things about Mark Martin years ago. Mark was unsuccessful in his first attempts at Cup, but now in the twilight of his career, he is the number one fan favorite for this weekend's 500.
Heard Jeff Boerger on the PA talking about Kansas Speedway.
The Economy has definitely affected Daytona Beach. Hotels are not full and are charging normal prices. Restaraunts have very little waiting. Scalpers are even having a hard time moving tickets. Scott Traylor would not get burned on tickets this year, well, maybe not......
One word of warning, the local television stations are calling fro rain on Sunday about the time the race is scheduled to start. At this point in time it appears it would only be delayed not a wash out.
Weather has been very nice all week, mostly in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Hopefully we can bring some home with us.
