The Wheatley Chronicles – Volume I , No. 26 – By Lonnie Wheatley (Tulsa, OK) - The World of Outlaws first 2013 invasion of Posse territory is among the key items covered in the latest installment of Tuesday’s Top Ten with USAC, POWRi, All Stars, Badgers and more included.

It’s time…

1. Trash Talk – It’s not talking trash if you can back it up, right?

Last week’s racing action got off to an early start, though one day later than planned after rain pushed the World of Outlaws event at Central PA’s Lincoln Speedway back from Wednesday to Thursday.

Early Wednesday, Gettysburg’s Danny Dietrich called out the Outlaws in the Twitter-verse, referring to the traveling series as the “Circus” and boldly proclaiming not only a Posse win but also that not a single “Clown” would be in the top five at Lincoln.

Dietrich did his part to back up his claims, leading all 35 laps to give Posse bragging rights for the night with his second WoO triumph at Lincoln in as many years, fighting off several strong challenges from Donny Schatz while Sammy Swindell rounded out the podium. It continued a turnaround of sorts for Dietrich, who had struggled somewhat in recent weeks until a win the previous Sunday night at Susquehanna.

While Dietrich offered up in victory lane that the Twitter claims were all in good fun, Swindell was quick to call the winner out by pointing out that a couple of clowns (himself and Schatz) were second and third to break up his predicted top five sweep.

If only the Posse and the fan base were just into the rivalry a little bit.

2. Been There. Or Not. – When Dave Darland battled past Kevin Thomas, Jr., past the midway point en route to winning Friday night’s Larry Rice Classic feature event at Bloomington Speedway, it made for quite the contrast in victory lane.

It marked the first USAC National Sprint Car triumph for car owners Steve and Carla Phillips, while Darland’s 41st career National Sprint Car win made it 21 consecutive years with at least one National win, making “The People’s Champ” just the third member of an exclusive club that also includes the greatness of A.J. Foyt and Mel Kenyon.

While Thomas, Jr., fell just short in his bid to become the first driver to post four consecutive USAC Sprint Car wins Rickey Hood accomplished the feat in 1985, a runner-up finish did propel him to the top of the Non-Wing 410 Sprint Car Power Rankings.

3. Hooker – Speaking of Hood, Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis paid tribute to the legendary Hooker Hood, father of Rickey.

After 11 weekends of rainouts, the fabled “Ditch” finally lifted the curtain on the 2013 season withSaturday night’s Hooker Hood Classic, the first edition of the event since the racing legend passed away last Christmas Eve after a pair of previous events with Hooker’s presence.

After suffering a “DNF” in the Hockett Motorsports No. 77 one night earlier in ASCS action at Cameron, MO, Crawley was back aboard Mike Ward’s familiar No. 88 on Saturday and raced to his second consecutive Hooker Hood Classic triumph in front of fellow Little Rock shoe Zach Pringle, with Cali wheelman Steven Tiner driving a Wade Oliver prepared entry to third. Tiner’s car carried the No. 99 in honor of Hooker Hood.

For Crawley, it marked his second win in as many weekends after a slow start to the season in terms of feature wins.

4. Domination – While Crawley exited the U.S. 36 feature at Cameron, MO, early on Friday night, Johnny Herrera went on to post one of the most remarkable performances in recent history by dismantling the ASCS National field.

Atop the Rod End Supply Winged 360 Sprint Car Power Rankings, Herrera showed exactly why by muscling past series rookie contender Cole Wood for the lead on the third lap and then obliterating the field by lapping all but runner-up Dustin Morgan as the final 30 rounds of the 35-lapper were run in non-stop fashion atop the lightning-fast, high-banked 3/8-mile oval.

“The thing was really good,” Herrera understated in victory lane after snapping a drought of 72 series starts without a win. Earlier in the night, Herrera’s primary sponsor Shawn Petersen, suffered a variety of injuries of the head and neck variety that will keep the Print Place proprietor out of action for some time.

5. Twin 25’s – Ohio’s Attica Raceway Park celebrated its 25th Anniversary of racing action with a pair of 25-lap feature events for Winged 410’s on Friday night.

After Danny Holtgraver made a late race move around fellow All Star regular Dale Blaney to win the first feature event, Okie invader Shane Stewart drove the Gaerte No. 3g wire-to-wire in the second 25-lapper.

Stewart’s second North American score of the season came ahead of a challenging D.J. Foos. A rookie contender in the 410 ranks, Foos rallied from 18th to fifth in the first feature before posting a solid runner-up finish in the nightcap from fourth.

6. Three Cars, Three Nights – Broken Arrow, OK, native Brady Bacon ranks as likely the most versatile Open Wheel driver around these days. Following in Hockett footsteps, Bacon has shown proficiency in Sprint Cars and Midgets, winged or non-winged and of whatever cubic inch displacement may be necessary on any given night.

Relocated to Indiana after several years of ASCS National competition, Bacon’s weekend opened on Friday night at Bloomington aboard his primary ride, the Hoffman Racing No. 69 Sprint Car. Bacon started his weekend out strong enough with a fifth-place run that keeps him in the thick of a tightly-bunched USAC Sprint Car points race that has the top eight tightly bunched.

Bacon transitioned to Midgets for the next two nights, driving the PPM Titanium No. 99 to a convincing POWRi victory at Macon ahead of fellow Okie Tyler Thomas and Cali native Thomas Meseraull on Saturday night before taking the wheel of the Wilke-Pak No. 11 for Sunday’s Angell Park Badger opener where a second win of the weekend was within reach before engine problems while holding a substantial lead opened the door for Darren Hagen’s second win of the year.

One driver that has matched Bacon’s exploits of already competing in Winged 410’s, Non-Wing 410’s, Winged 360’s and Midgets thus far in 2013 is another Oklahoma shoe, Christopher Bell. The Norman, OK, racer, that added a 305 win to the mix earlier as well, bested 39 POWRi Midget entries at Belle-Clairon Friday before Bacon topped 43 at Macon.

7. The Spoiler – After Danny Dietrich topped the first WoO event of the year in Posse territory on Thursday, rabid Posse fans were looking for a second win in as many nights on Friday at Williams Grove.

And, until the final few feet, it looked like they would get exactly that as Greg Hodnett came off of turn four with the checkered flag in sight.

Donny Schatz had other ideas, crossing under and surging ahead to take his fourth series win of the year in a wild feature that had Schatz, Hodnett, Fred Rahmer and Daryn Pittman all dicing for the lead in the closing laps. “I don’t usually get that excited, but that was a lot of fun,” Schatz exclaimed in victory lane after deflating the partisan Posse crowd with his last corner heroics.

Knotted at one-one, Mother Nature denied Saturday’s card at the Grove and then pushed Sunday’s go at New York’s Orange County back to Monday where Kraig Kinser busted through for his first win of the season.

8. From the Depths – Odds typically aren’t that good when starting from nine rows deep in a Winged 410 Sprint Car feature. Greg Wilson didn’t let those odds stop him though.

After starting way back in 18th in Saturday’s feature event at Ohio’s Fremont Speedway, Wilson was ultimately battling Brian Smith for the win just a handful of laps from the end before a little casual wheel-banging ended Smith’s run. Smith was first to congratulate the winner at the scales after Wilson fought off D.J. Foos over the final four laps.

“We started 18th and I’m sitting there and I’m thinking if we can run top five I’ll be happy,” Wilson explained after his second win of the year following a previous Fremont score on April 27.

9. Double Duty – When the 360-ci winged Empire Super Sprints invaded Central PA’s Selinsgrove Speedway for the first time since 1996 on Saturday night, several locals opted for double-duty by also competing in the 358-ci ranks.

With 36 ESS entries and 21 358’s on hand, home field advantage obviously paid off in this case. At least for T.J. Stutts and Pat Cannon.

Stutts paced the final ten rounds of the ESS feature en route to a $3,000 payday with Cannon in tow with the duo reversing roles in the 358 feature with Cannon taking the checkered flag ahead of Stutts in second.

Several opted for double duty at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night as well with Brian Brown faring the best with a 360 win followed by a runner-up finish to Davey Heskin in 410 action. Reigning ASCS champ Jason Johnson ran third to Brown and Clint Garner in the 360 main and then took seventh with the 410 ranks.

10. Double Dip – At least three different drivers parked it in victory lane a pair of times over the weekend including Danny Holtgraver, Shane Golobic and Glenn Styres.

After topping the opening leg of Attica’s Twin 25’s on Friday, Pittsburgh’s Holtgraver took advantage of Dale Blaney’s last lap misfortune at Ripley, West Virginia’s I-77 Speedway for his first All-Star score of the year ahead of lady racer Paige Polyak. It was the second night in a row that Holtgraver stole what was looking to be a Blaney victory. “This is huge for us, it’s a big confidence booster,” Holtgraver commented.

On the Left Coast, Shane Golobic held off Bud Kaeding to win Friday’s main event at Ocean Speedway and then survived a right rear wheel packed with mud over the final laps to hold off Andy Gregg at Placerville on Saturday.

Across the border to the north, Glenn Styres opened the Ohsweken season with a Friday night victory and then lifted the lid on the Southern Ontario Sprint season by taking the top step of the podium at Brighton on Saturday with teammates Jamie Collard and Keith Dempster in second and third.

This week’s edition of Tuesday’s Top Ten closes with news of the strange, as an apparent “tree problem” forced the cancellation of an open Winged 410 Sprint Car event on Friday in Rock Rapids, IA. Apparently, the city found the pit area suitable dumping grounds for deceased trees, not removing them in time to make move for the haulers.

By Sam Martin, WOO Sprint Series PR (Middletown, NY) — Kraig Kinser stole the show at Orange County Fair Speedway en route to his first World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series feature win of the 2013 season.

Kinser and his Messila Valley started alongside Chad Kemenah on the front row with both drivers seeking a breakthrough victory. Kinser jumped ahead on the outside and powered to the lead while Kemenah was forced to hold off third-place finishing Tony Stewart along with Paul McMahan and Donny Schatz.

The victory gives Kinser, the son of legendary King of the Outlaws Steve Kinser, four top-five runs and 10 top-10 finishes this season. It also was the first time he’s won at Orange County Fair Speedway.

“Hopefully we got out of the slump we’ve been having,” said Kinser, of Bloomington, Ind. “I started getting loose around the top and just started searching. I saw some lapped cars on the bottom when I got into traffic down there. I made a couple of turns through there and I knew that’s probably where I had to be, try to make them pass me around the top. It would be harder than leaving the bottom wide open.”

Kinser weaved through traffic in the Casey’s General Story/Messilla Valley Transportation Maxim as the event ran its full 25 laps caution free. While Kinser maintained his solid lead up front, there was a heated battle for the second through sixth positions. Kemenah started on the pole in his Hampshire Engines Maxim and finished second, but he first had to fight off Donny Schatz and his STP/Armor All J&J then later Schatz’s boss, Tony Stewart and his Chevrolet Performance/Mobil 1 J&J. Kemenah was able to maintain his track position in the lead pack of cars as points leader Daryn Pittman charged to a sixth-place run, finishing just 2.075 seconds behind Kemenah. Pittman’s sixth-place finish netted him his 21st top-10 finish of the year in the Kasey Kahne Racing Great Clips GF1.

“The season we’ve had so far with the wrecking and whatever else we’ve been doing, we’re happy,” said runner-up Kemenah, from Elvada, Ohio. “You know we’ve just got to keep running in the top five and we’ll starting winning. I killed the right rear tire so bad I was having a hard time hanging on there in the last few laps.”

Leading qualifier, Stewart, made a very hard run at Kemenah exiting turn four in the waning laps, but Stewart came up short and finished in the third spot. McMahan finished fourth after starting fifth. Mid-race he battled with Schatz and Stewart and attempted to work his way up to a podium finish. Towards the end, McMahan got around Schatz to earn a hard fought fourth-place finish. Schatz crossed the line in fifth, less than a second-and-a-half behind Kemanah.

“Nobody in the top four could run the top except for Donny, then it got to where it finally cleaned off enough on the bottom to where it got a little more grip,” said Stewart, a three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup champion. “That’s kind of the advantage of being behind two guys one on top and bottom, you can gauge which line is getting quicker.”

Kraig would not be the only Kinser to find success, his father and car owner, Steve Kinser would earn the KSE Hard Charger award.

Tony Stewart made the most of the dash, after a six was drawn, that was where he would start the dash. In the six-lap event, Stewart picked through the field to finish third.

The World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series is back in action tomorrow night at New Egypt (N.J.) Raceway before heading to The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C., on Friday night to kick off Memorial Day weekend.
