Call to action. Track Safety

I have been reading all of the post this week after last week's tragedy, and I can only remember one post talking about driver safety. I hope that the KC racing community can learn the death of Jeff Osborn. It is way too easy to say that it was just a "freak accident" a "racing deal", and go back to the status quo. However, does this do justice to Jeff's legacy? Does this do justice to all the racers that will buckle up this weekend? Look at all of the strides that NASCAR made after Dale Sr's death. Look at the effort that Indy car has made after the death of Dan Weldon. All tracks should look at their tracks and look at all potential safety hazards and ask the five why's.

I will throw out some easy topics that all tracks should look at. I have seen these issues at many tracks in the KC metro area. This post is targeted at everyone.

- Catch fences. Are there any holes in the fence? Have hasty repairs been made on race night that need to re-done? Is the hardware rusty? Is there any sharp edges? Are the safety cables still secure? How much slack does the safety cables have in them? How close do you allow the fans to the catch fence? Do you allow fans to stand next to the fence?

- Safety walls. Are the walls the correct height? Has the track surface changed to make the track walls to low? A wall that is too low will actually help launch a car out of the park instead of keeping it in the park.

-Telephone poles and Rail road ties should not be used in any way to help protect the track or for any catch fences. Telephone poles do not have any give. A car hitting a telephone pole will always lose. Rail road ties also do not give, but the bigger problem with a rail road tie is when someone lands on them. The rail road tie will impale any thing in its way.

-Track lighting. Is the racing surface well lit? Is the entrance/exit to the pits well lit? Are all of the lights working? Are there dark spots? Does all of the safety lighting work? Are the safety lights mounted at the right spots? Are there safety lights in the turns, or just at the end of the straight aways? Are the safety lights hidden?

-Track officials. (After watching a track official die on the track, this is my personal pet peeve) There is absolutely no need to have a track official on the track. When the yellow flag goes off, the drivers know that the green flag will be the next flag on the track. During restarts is the time that the driver is the most in tune to the flag man. We do not need someone darting on the track telling us something that the flagman has already told the drivers. With the use of raceceivers, there is no reason for a safety worker to be on the track. This is a tradition that needs to end. If the track official never steps on the track, they never have to worry about being hit on the track by a car.

-Track safety rules. While most tracks have rules about firesuits, do they ever do inspections? How many times have you seen someone come out of nice enclosed trailer, and put on a five year old fire suit that you can see through? How many firesuits have holes in them? How many firesuits are caked in oil and grease? Everyone requires racing seat belts, but does everyone have a date rule? Belt manufacturers recommend replacing the belts every year. Especially for dirt track drivers who regularly take their cars to the car wash.

These topics are the ones that come to my head right away. There are many other topics that could be addressed. Fire crews, tow truck crews, safety of photographers, safety in the pits. and probably many more.

Racers never want to think that anything bad will happen to them. However, we all know that racing is a dangerous sport. With that being said, we need to learn from the mistakes of the past. We need to strive to make improvements. We need to look at the way we do things and ask why five times. If you truly perform the five why's correctly, you will learn that the reasons that you are doing something is not what you originally thought. We have two of the best tracks in the nation within three hours of KC. We should take a road trip to Knoxville and learn from them. Thier fire team is considered best in class. We should take a road trip to Lucas Oil and learn how to build a fantastic race track. Safety is something that you must work at. It is not something that you say is:" good enough".

I do not want to go to a track and watch another track official die. I do not want to go to a track and watch the drivers pass the helmet because of a driver that has died on the track. It is way too easy to say that it was a "racing accident" but if we know what is dangerous at a track and know how to correct the issue, why would we not want to take the effort to correct it?. Look at all of the improvements NASCAR made after Dale Sr's death. Will the KC tracks have the same improvements after Jeff's death?

Jimmy Spencer To Retire from Broadcasting

Jimmy Spencer To Retire, Take Up Gardening And Travel

May 11, 2012 By Steve Waid
http://motorsportsunplugged.com/?p=7695#comments

Former NASCAR driver Jimmy Spencer, presently a TV personality, says he is going to retire and pursue other interests. Why? It's what he wants to do.

DARLINGTON, S.C. – Sitting in a director's chair at Greg Biffle's hauler in the Darlington Raceway garage, Jimmy Spencer looked like a judge ready to hold court.

However, unlike Spencer, a judge wouldn't be chewing on a big cigar.

Spencer, a former NASCAR driver and current television personality who goes by the nickname "Mr. Excitement," has never backed down from speaking his mind. And at Darlington, he wasn't about to change.

His subject wasn't racing, religion, politics or anything of the sort. It was much more personal.

"I am going retire. That's it. I am going to put my house up for sale and move back to Pennsylvania where I was raised," said Spencer, who won twice in 478 Sprint Cup starts with such team owners as Bobby Allison, Junior Johnson and Travis Carter.

Spencer also competed on several other NASCAR circuits. His record includes 12 Nationwide Series wins and 15 victories on the Modified Tour.

"I love Pennsylvania," Spencer added. "My dad has dementia but he's still alive and so is my mother-in-law. I want to go home and spend time with them.

"My house is right up there off exit 28 (from Interstate 77 at Lake Norman). Wanna buy it?"

Spencer, from Berwick, Pa., isn't leaving North Carolina simply to re-unite with relatives. Hardly. His plans are more far-reaching than that.

"I love gardening," Spencer said. "So I am going to build a small farm near home, off of Mayes Road up there. I'll get to do some gardening, but that isn't all I am going to do.

"I am going to start traveling. I want to go to Germany and I'm going to Switzerland. And I'm going to take the train up in Canada.

"Biffle told me to go to Seattle, then drive up and get on the train in Canada. Then I'm going to take that train clear across Canada. I don't care how long it takes."

Spencer said he's motivated to retire and travel for a couple of reasons.

"I love architecture," he said, "and there are castles over there in Europe that are 2,000 years old – I mean, 2,000 years old. Can you imagine that?"

The truth of the mater is Spencer is motivated by a much more personal reason.

"When you get up in age and you realize you can't do what you want to do because of your health or whatever, well, I don't want to deal with that," he said.

"I'm 55 years old and I know people who retired when they were 65 years old and because of their health, or something else, they can't do anything. That's not going to be me, understand?"

Spencer paused for a moment.

"What's has changed my whole attitude," he said, "is when my sister Chrissy died two years ago.

"She had ovarian cancer, but as far as I'm concerned there was no reason for her to die.

"So my point in all this is that life is too short. I'm going to start doing stuff.

"That's what I want and that's what I'm going to do."

Nothing else need be said – except, perhaps, "Bon voyage."

Years ago I was in a drivers meeting when the subject of the "move over: flag and "out of control" drivers came up. They were raking one rookie racer over the coals pretty hard
From the look on his face you could see he wanted to climb under a rock and this was probably going to be his last race.
When the drivers meeting was dismissed the previous years track champion made a comment rather loudly stating a lot of people must have forgot how they drove when they started racing.
He then went to the promoter and asked if he could make a few laps in the new kids car before formal hotlaps and was told he could. He went and talked to the kid and after talking to him took his car out. After hotlaps he helped change the kids setup and even donated a couple of shocks.
Later that year he won his first heat race. Years later he was a track champion. And to think they almost ran him off.

If there is a racer that makes you feel uncomfortable when you come up on them on the track why not show we are the racing family we always claim to be instead of trying to discourage them.
Get to know them and help change them from the driver you dread racing around to the driver you enjoy racing door to door with night after night.

The correct thing to do is to go talk to the guy/gal and most of the tiime ,, issue over,,,

But if the conversation does not go well and it occurs more times,, and the officails have been notified,, drivers feel they have no choice,,, either give it back or leave the place,,,

I have heard officals,, (not in this case) accuse drivers of being crybabies when they come to them to talk to them about something, not good,,
With the way society is today and people that travel all over the place,,, we no longer meet up at the greezy spoon and talk about things,,, this seems to be the water cooler place anymore,,
I am going to give my two cents on what I have read here and what I know from experience.

As far as racing goes at Valley Speedway, I have been there a few times and in my opinion, the Racing is good. Now Dennis don't hate me but I do think the Flagman you have needs a little guidance on how fast he throws a yellow, if "you" (Dennis) are the one that decides when he throws the yellow it is your track and your making the calls no one to blame but you at that point. I just feel this is holding up your show badly the times I have been there. (Way too many restarts).

As far as track workers making calls, what I have learned over the years is this,
1. They have friends racing and will not make calls against them. (Favoritism) This cannot happen period.
2. They are afraid that the racer or someone my come and knock a knot on there head if they make the call. (This kind of call must happen) the track must support the Official. Back up your Officials.
3. You have ONE person making all the calls because of his/her position, and they do not even see what happened and still make the call. (This person has Big Head syndrome and won't listen to know one else that saw what happened) Cannot have this either.
We have to rely on every track Official to help make the calls, even if sometimes it the wrong call, we all make mistakes. In addition, no, I do not have all the answers, if I did, I would charge to fix every racetracks problems and be a very wealthy man.

Dennis, that is all the bad things I am going to say because I totally under stand where you are at right now. If it were that easy, everyone would own a racetrack. I do not have to tell you that, No matter what you do someone is going to complain. I also feel like a baby setter sometimes for a bunch of grown adults, come on folks its just not that hard to get along, act like adults. As for you getting on the forum boards and responding to what people have to say, all I can tell you is this, "YOU GO DENNIS" I have done the same thing and have had people tell me as a track "Official" you should not do that it just causes problems. Well I feel someone from the track needs to respond and show that they care, or you could just ignore them and what they have to say, not a good idea. I would rather have someone show me they care about everyone that attends their track. I also think you are headed the correct path and it will all come together in time.

As for the fighting problem, Dennis you are doing the right thing, DO NOT TOLLERATE IT PERIOD. BOOT THEM OUT AND SEND THEM TO JAIL. We do not need this at our racetracks. Grab one of my Officials and you are out of here also. Great JOB there in my opinion.

I have had some health problems this year and have not been able to Tech at Humboldt Speedway or Heartland Park Topeka yet, but I have had my surgery and feeling better and I am ready to watch some races before returning to Teching at those tracks the next weekend. So I think I will just come to Valley and watch some racing this weekend and maybe stroll through the pits and introduce myself to that cheater Dale Eaton, been wanting to meet him anyway. LOL... I am coming to meet you Dale. Maybe I will get to chat with Dennis also. Looking forward to watching some races GOOD OR BAD I will have a good time, why you ask, because it is Racing.

It's very easy to tell you know what is happening from the inside of racing operations. We try to make improvements each week if we see areas that can help with out disrupting something else. Sometimes it's a fine line and you don't want to overreact but be fair to all.

If you are here this weekend and after you go to the pits an DQ Dale for cheating come up to the tower and see how we try and make things work. ( just kidding Dale, your cars have been teched more than any cars that have ever raced here with no problems.)

I'm glad to here your health is getting better, we need good people in this sport and I would like to reaffirm that 99% of the fans and teams are fantastic and the other 1% we will give a chance but there are things that won't be tolerated.

Carl FYI - All of your 3 points are severely INCORRECT. No one official makes any call at Valley Speedway. Every call is considered and no snap judgements are made by one person - no matter the size of his head.

Also - they are no officials fearing for their lives from retaliation at Valley. Nor are there any officials helping their personal favorites. Do the officials disagree? Well heck yes - sometimes one guy sees things from a different angle and makes his call - but 3 others think something else happened. There have been times where mistakes have been made - it's a fact. No track or individual gets every call right every night. Please know that every official at Valley strives to be right and none ever want to make a mistake that affects any driver or race.

The lap car deal is another one of those discussions that could go on forever.

Technically, until the leader passes them they are not a lapped car, why wouldn't they be showed the same respect as any other car until they are lapped. And as far as those that think it is OK to spin a slower car to move them out of the way, how would you feel if it collected your driver in the process.

Intentionally spinning any car presents a hazard for the other cars on the track and should not ever be tolerated, no matter what the circumstance.

I think a driver that can work thru lapped traffic without touching any other car earns a lot more respect than one that just plows their way thru, and it is a better show for the crowd. No different than a fast car that for some reason has to start in the back of a feature, because they are normally a front runner does it make OK to move people out of the way???

Radios definently should not be used. There's a lot of reasons there's no asphalt racing around here and boring racing is one. No body wants to see a guy blocking for a whole race because his radio is telling him where to go.

As far as using the raceiver, maybe it could work but rodney is probably right.

I know when getting into lap traffic it's part of being fast but the move over flag should be used and a lap car should move over. They may be racing too but if your slow enough to get lapped you should move over. I've been in both positions and I remember many times that Hershel moved a car out of my way and I also have had him throw it at me my first couple years. It works both ways in a positive manner.

I wasn't there but if shad moved a lap car out of the way I'm sure he let the lap car know he was there a few times first. Waiting a full lap for a pack of lap cars shouldn't happen and they should be moved out of the way after 2 laps

IMO the leader is never at fault for lap traffic. He is the leader your in the way. If your given a couple hey I am here nudges and dont move then dont be mad you got moved.

drivers need to control thier team members, if a team member starts something the entire team should be held accountable at least IMO. Your pit crew respents you.
I was very impressed by Dennis actions to the issues in the pits.He did what was right and took control.

@ Dennis,,, Been there and done that and I do understand how hard it is but we all learn at an early age,, when a person retaliates as their first response,,, they normally get caught. There is no way some of the after race things have not been seen by a track offical. I feel for you, really I do,,, Trying to make the point that even if a driver feels it was justified,, it never is,,, going to an official should be the first choice,, not bashing them or their car,,,

@ Russel,,, nope,, no way am I singleing out your kid,, that is why I pointed out what I did and how wrong it was,,,, He was just an example of an incident that occured while I was watching from the stands,So was the kid charging the injured dirver... clear cases that everyone observed.
He has incredible potential... But it should have been dealt with that night by the staff in some manner,, He should not be expected to take anything from anyone either!! But again ramming someone after the race,,, if I am the track person or flagman,, all points for the night,, money and at least a one week suspension, first time,,, second time,,, gone.. Earl had it right,,, get out of your car and your done,,, Chad lyle learned that,, and it was not even due to anything other than checking his car but it was the rule,

We used to use a black flag and a checkered flag in go karting at the end of a race that had some type of incident to let EVERYONE know the race was under official review,,,, it kept eveyones blood pressure down long enough for the track people to "discuss " it...Communication is the key to all of this and some way to let poeple know it is being dealt with..

You cannot keep penalties under wraps,, they must be disclosed so that everyone knows their will be penalties,,
Saturday June 2nd,The Speedway will hold the 3rd Annual Reliable Chevrolet B-Mods special. This event pays $500 to win and $70 to start the feature.Last season Veteran Larry Tindle of Springfield was the high point car and redrew the number 1 spot for the feature which was caution free as 19 of 23 starters completed the lead lap. This will be a Transport Graphics point event along with USRA points awarded.B-Modified drivers will draw for positions and run through the passing points system with the top 8 to redraw.Past winners include Tindle and Jon Yeoman Jr.There will be a $20 car entry fee for this event and all other classes will be competing on Reliable Chevrolet/Scout night.GM Performance Crate money is also up for grabs in this race which could make for a nice payday for a lucky driver.
Saturday June 9th,The Power I National Midget Series returns to the "Quick-Quarter" for their second ever visit to Springfield Raceway.Last season National Champion Brad Loyet found the top groove around the Springfield Banks and charged to a victory as 2-3 wide racing was the call all night.Nearby National Driver Andrew Felker of Carl Junction,Missouri and many other local drivers will have a short trip as they call Springfield a home track for the trip.A full Transport Graphics Point events will help fill out the excitement.
June 16th will feature a normal exciting Points event for all classes as the Speedway prepares to finish June in Grand Style.
June 30th will feature the 2nd Annual Rob Burgess Memorial featuring a $500 to win for this exciting class.Rob Burgess of Leslie Floors in the Joplin area was a strong supporter and friend of the local racing scene and loved the Midwest Modz. This race is only for Midwest Modz drivers in the area,no upper division drivers may compete and you must run only the Midwest Modz class.
"Rob loved this class and the concept of getting the cost down for Modified Racing." quoted co-owner Jerry Hoffman.'That is why no B-Mod,A-Mod,Factory Stock drivers allowed. We want this event for the little guys who support the class night after night in the area. This is their night to shine and that is the way Rob wanted it.A very unique trophy awaited the winner last season as Burgess was an avid bowler. His Bowling Ball was mounted into a special trophy with his daughter Jessica presenting it last season to winner Trevor Drake as he bested 23 other Midwest Modz drivers in grabbing the win.The race will be a tracks point event, but will open draw with a top 8 redraw for starting spots.
The next event became the Larry Phillips Memorial as that event had moved from I-44 Speedway to Springfield Raceway which features MARS and MLRA Challenge events in the Former NASCAR National Champions hometown as the very exciting weekly show has stretched out to different race fans as they leave with the WOW factor of that was great.
This season weather allowed the 1st ever March Madness in which the top drivers had to both race their way and shoot their way into the feature.
With 3 MLRA/MARS Late Model Challenge events scheduled for 2012,the fans left after the Kuntz Memorial wanting more.Well Springfield Raceway is not going to disappoint those fans as the 1st annual Casey's General Stores Summer Meltdown will be held on July 28th to give the local area regional Late Model fans of MARS and MLRA hopefully even more to talk about.

I will say this about Valley, Valley Fans, Valley Officials and Dennis...

1) Name me another track owner who cares enough about the drivers and fans to come on this message board and discuss things. I can't think of one. Right or wrong (and I have seen him admit mistakes) Dennis is the only track owner you see on here discussing things and explaining them to fans and drivers.

2) Valley fans,,,, frankly I see no fans from any other area track that are as passionate as Valley fans. You sure don't see many other posts from fans about other area tracks.

3) Valley officials,,,, I also never see officials from another track on here trying to explain things like Valley officials do.

I have myself been critical about Valley for some things. Why ? Because I give a damn. Same as the other Valley fans who show some constructive critism here. You can tell Dennis and his Officials give a damn also though, thats why you see them here explaining things here when other owners don't. I know I sure as hell couldn't do their job all year without making a few mistakes.

How about we just all "Go Racin"

racingirl67 & libertybelle - 1 post wonders. Does it make you feel good slamming a 14 year old young man? The young man races hard and he races too win. I hate 1 post wonders that create drama - it just causes more friction at the race track. Man up and go see the driver or his parents. Go see Phillip his grandpa.

JoeB - Hope some day we race again. Your a class act and one of racers that made it fun. Please stop by our pits the next time your at Valley.

Dennis Shroud - Thanks for your hard work and giving us an opportunity to race at your track. Some of us have experienced, been through and understand your and your officials pain that you felt from last Friday. God will help you get thru the pain. We will keep you and the track help in our prayers along with the Osborn family.

Racers and pit crew - Need to look at your drivers safety equipment. Is the safety equipment up to spec? Look at seat belts, the age of your seat belts, look at how the seat is mounted, the hardware for both the seatbelts and seat mounts, door bar padding, roof bar padding, any rough sheet metal that might cut the driver. The fuel cell bladder, how old is the bladder, does it leak?
It's the drivers responsibility and his or her pit crew to make sure the race car is safe to race.

If you really look at this at the basic level,, you can track most of this stuff to a very small group of racers that move around and cause havok everywhere they land... They do these things, cheat,, rough drive,, threaten other teams with the thugs in theire groups until most cars head elsewhere,, then the track is ruined with a reputation,,

The track is only as good as the drivers choose to be,, as long as a promoter,,, any promoter allows some teams to do things that others cannot,,, there are going to be ontrack and off track issues,,,

I witnessed the 13 year olde Trevor Hunt slame someone in the ass after the races ones night,,, not a mistake,, he was angry,,,, What is a person to do about that? beat a 13 year olds ass??? I dont think beating anybodys ass is the correct response,,, but nothing was done, so now its ok for the next person to do it,,,,, Billy Crane did the same thing to me last year,,, I hit him back,,, because I knew nothing would be done,,,, I did go to talk to him a week later and it was huge mistake and we handled it correctly latter,,, not at first,,, I will race anywhere with Billy now,,,, He proved to me,, that he is a man of his word,,,, others should be so wise!!

In the SS,, a guy jumps of of his car and goes after a driver that was hurt in a rollover,,,,, he should have been banned for that no matter what happened first,,, nothing justifys his actions NOTHING!!

Lakeside allows some teams to run body panels that are not allowed in the rules,,,, Threatens sanctions at the drivers meeting and then does NOTHING!!

I had a team come to my pits and threaten me,,, nothing was done to them and it happened in clear view of at least 3 techs,,,, a team the moved to bmods because they cannot consistantly win Amods,,, sad.

Every time I went to valley I got crashed,,, I am not as good a car as a lot of them but they just allow them to run you over and nothing is done,,,, so I choose not to race there anylonger with my car,,, I still attend the place from time to time but until the run the trouble off,,, it is to expensive for me to race a car there.

Run these people off Dennis and your car count will Climb rapidly...

Joe

Come to the tower some night and I will let you see what we see. I am serious about this, we are watching 20+ cars not just 1 and things do get by us.

You make many good points and we will be acting on many of them. If anyone goes to someones pit to start trouble they just need to let us know. We can't monitor almost 100 peoples pits and many teams do go to other teams pits to just visit or discuss an issues in a rational manor.

If someone comes to your pits and starts trouble be prepared to get an official and go to their pits and point them out. We will remove them from the pits.

I hear what many of you are saying and it is sad that I feel more like a baby sitter than a promoter some nights. But as you pointed out 90% are following the rules most nights it is the 10% that either need to follow the rules or find another track. I am prepared to help those 10% find another track.

As far as rules go I agree they need to be followed and with that said by the rules anlge plug stock replacement heads with the allowed casting numbers are leagle or should be. I think that the berts brinss etc shouldnt be allowed even if its on a crate motor but they are allowed so no reason to comlaine, Have a great summer supporting any and all tracks you choose to run

Bmod rules unless I missed something dont show you have to run just a straight plug head I know the factorys show it but however sbc 3991492 heads come in both angle plug and are a double hump, dart also has the replacement heads that can be bought in either straight or angle plug. IMO weve ran both and couldnt tell a diffrense, in the classes we are running if someone thinks the angle plug has a advantage ove the straight plug so be it but I know a factory that ran there all last year with angle plugs and never came close to winning
