Bodenhamer and Turner headline at L A Raceway

LaMonte, MO - May 17, 2008
By: Rachel Harper

L A Raceway kicked off its regular season Friday night, May 16, after five consecutive weeks of rainouts, with 121 cars checking in at the pit gates.

On the second start of the United Late Model Association feature event at L A Raceway Friday, Jason Bodenhamer of Centerview put the pedal to the medal and never looked back.

"It's neat to be back racing locally (for the fans)," he said.

Bryon Allison of Marshall put on an impressive show never giving up the second spot, but also trying hard to give Bodenhamer a run for his money. By lap three, the competition heated up as Kathy Tonoli of Hermitage, David Barker of Kingsville and J.D. Hubert of Cross Timbers battled for fifth position. On lap six, Tonoli, Barker and Hubert traveled around most of the track three abreast. Barker and Hubert passed Tonoli to battle for third position with Tommy Cordray of Browning on lap seven. Hubert made the pass on the lap 11 restart for third.

Mike Ryun of Pleasant Valley, who started ninth, had a late charge and came barreling through the pack. By lap 10, he was setting sixth with Barker heavy in his sights. Another individual with an impressive run was James Rutledge of California. He started the race in eighth and caused the first caution of the race because the car didn't seem to want to accelerate. So after being sent to the tail of the field, by lap 13 he was putting pressure on Barker for sixth. Than Rutledge's worst nightmare came true as he looped it in the bottom of turn two and pulled his second caution for the night, sending him to the trailer.

The last few laps were relatively quiet, except for Ryun taking fourth from Cordray. Bodenhamer crossed the finish line with Allison, Hubert, Ryun and Cordray rounding out the top five.

Bodenhamer said he has picked up three feature wins, a third place finish and a fifth place finish in the five times he has had his late model out this year.

Mitchell Moore of Edgerton, Kan. had the upset of the night in the 305 Sprint car division. He performed a beautiful "slide job" under Jonathan Cornell on the very last turn to pick up the feature win.

At the start of the feature, Matt Simpson of Versailles made an impressive run for the lead of the outside of row one, but looped in coming out of turn two sending him to the tail of the field on the complete restart.

Ryan Schlender of Sedalia took the lead out of turn on the restart until Cornell of Sedalia shot by him, going into turns three and four, like he came out of a cannon. Simpson had his second caution on lap two as he looped it in the bottom of turn four causing him to be done for the night.

As the race got underway again, Cornell charged spacing himself from Schlender as Moore slipped under him coming out of turn two. Michael White of LaMonte, Tyler Utz of Sedalia and Tom McGarry of Alma where setting in behind them.

Over the next couple of laps, McGarry quietly worked his way through cars for third position. On lap seven, Cornell was already into lap traffic when he made contact with Ryan Olah of Independence in turn three. Cornell continued charging as Olah took his car to the pits.

As the laps wound down and the race looked like smooth sailing to the end, White looped his car in turn two on lap 11.
On the restart Cornell had a great advantage over Schlender as the lap car of Dakota Carroll caused Schlender to be unable to stay with him. On the next lap, Moore took second from Schlender.

As the final lap was concluding and it looked as Cornell was going to remain untouched throughout the entire race, Moore slid under him coming out of turn four to take the checkereds. McGarry, Schlender and Randall Roberts of Cole Camp finished in the top five.

"I got closer to him on the last lap," Mitchell said. "I just put a slide job on him and that's all I needed. It doesn't always work, but it did and I was happy with that. It's nice to win, but winning like this is always better."

Another upset came at the end of the Xtreme Motors Street Stock feature event when Ted Welschmeyer of Tebbetts got caught behind a lapper forfeiting first and second place to Scott Krause of Concordia, defending point's champion, and Troy Reasoner of Urich.

"I was just waiting for an error," Krause said, so he could make the move for the win.

At the drop of the flag, Welschmeyer and Krause began battling for the lead. As they completed lap one, Welschmeyer took the lead with Robert Brown of Urich falling into second place.

Heavy battling would commence between Brown and Krause throughout the first few laps until something went wrong with Brown's car. A caution was drawn by Butch Knox of Sedalia as he went up and over turns three and four. During the caution, Brown opted to stay on the track but tag the tail of the field. Welschmeyer, Krause and Reasoner continued to show the field of cars around the track. Laps were quickly winding down and it was the end of lap 13 that was not what Welschmeyer wanted to encounter during the feature.

Welschmeyer got hung up behind Brown coming out of turn four with nowhere to go. Welschmeyer watched as Krause and Reasoner sailed around the top side of the track and handed him the third position.

"I just hit the brakes and was able to miss," Krause said, as Welschmeyer was caught behind the lap traffic with no other option but come to almost a complete stop.

Krause took the first feature win of the season with Reasoner, Welschmeyer, Kevin Perkins of Sedalia and Justin Metzner of Sedalia taking top honors.

But the night was not over as Perkins erupted into smoke as he let off the gas crossing the finish line and left a stream of oil down the front shoot.

Local driver Terry Schultz of Sedalia had a promising night as he started on the pole in the W-K Modified feature event. On the start, Schultz, Luke Feeback of Harrisonville and Eric Turner of Hermitage gave spectators a view of three-wide car racing out of turn two and down the backstretch.

Shultz came out of turn four with the lead, but by lap three Turner took the lead. Feeback and Jimmy Dowell of Marshall battled for third. Defending points champion Jason Thompson of Concordia was back in fifth position, but would continue to work his way up slowly.

Turner took the checkereds with Schultz, Thompson, Dowell and Jason Bodenhamer of Centerview edging out Feeback for the top five spots of the night's feature event.

The night hosted a series of several upsets, including Danny Everts of Knob Noster driving right under his son, Jacob Everts of Knob Noster, on the final turns of a Hobby Stock feature event to pick up a win of his own.
