Karrick ends up second in NASCAR Division I

Daytona Beach, FL - September 27, 2006
By: NASCAR

Philip Morris has won the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Division I championship and he isn’t done yet.

Morris, of Ruckersville, Va., clinched the Division I honors last Saturday following a fourth-place finish at Motor Mile Speedway, in Radford, Va. For this achievement, Morris will be honored at the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series awards ceremony in Las Vegas on Nov. 11 and receive a $25,000 bonus.

It’s the second major NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series title for Morris, who captured the NASCAR Blue Ridge Region championship in 2001.

Morris will race one more time, for what could be his biggest title yet. He still has a mathematical chance of winning the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series national championship if he wins another race – which he’ll try to do Saturday night at Caraway Speedway, in Asheboro, N.C.

The current national championship leader is Joe Kosiski, of Omaha, Neb., who is seeking his second national title. Kosiski races at I-80 Speedway, in Greenwood, Neb., and Adams County Speedway, in Corning, Iowa, and already has won the NDWS Division II title. Kosiski is in line to win the national title if Morris is unsuccessful in his championship bid Saturday at Caraway.

To beat Kosiski for the championship, Morris will need to win Saturday’s race at Caraway – with a minimum of 21 cars in the field to give Morris the maximum amount of NASCAR bonus points. (NASCAR bonus points awarded in each NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series race, based on the number of cars in the field. If there are between 15-20 cars in the field, each driver receives 10 bonus points, or 20 bonus points if there are 21 or more cars.)

Morris admits it’s a tough proposition, but welcomes the chance to race for a national championship.

“I’m the biggest, longest shot to win,” Morris said. “I have never even seen [Caraway Speedway]. It’s going to be a long shot but I want to go down swinging. I’ve had a lot of support and I’m going to take a chance and see how we do. If we don’t win, I’ll be the first to congratulate Mr. Kosiski.”

The winner receives a $50,000 bonus and a special place in NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series history, as the national champion in its’ 25th anniversary season.
