Simmons celebrates first win at Humboldt

Humboldt, KS - May 10, 2008
By: Scott L Stewart

Zack Simmons had the Humboldt Speedway crowd on their feet Friday night with a spectacular "I can't bear to watch" high side pass that netted the youngest of the racing Simmons family his first B Mod feature win of the year.

Todd Kidwell started on pole of the feature, and for 9 laps was in control. Simmons, on the other hand, started third row inside, and drove hard to get behind the leader, who occupied the middle grove of the Humboldt high banks. A test of the low groove proved negative, leading Simmons to go to the land where most fear to tread; the very top, flirting with the cement wall. Once commited, Simmons refused to back off, and he and Kidwell were side by side for nearly an entire lap while the fans held their collective breath. Finally, Kidwell was forced to yield, and Simmons was victorious. Robbie Grisier took a pounding, but held on for third spot behind Kidwell. In fourth was Riley Whitworth, with Billy Lyda fifth.

Travis Larson led fourteen of the sixteen laps in the Factory Stock featue, before a determined Steve Stuart was able to overtake him at the white flag and score the win. With Larson in second, Derrek Wilson recorded the third spot, followed by Jeff Cleaver and John Rosson.

Gregg Gauss of Yates Center won $156.00 in 50/50 money.

Jay Laymons, Jr. cleaned up in Street Stock, first winning his heat, then leading the feature wire to wire. Zack Marsh gave all he had in a runner up effort, while Scott Stuart finished third, Tyler James fourth, and Dusty Marvin fifth.

Despite early pressure from brother Whitey, Jess Folk, Jr. took the Modified feature with little drama. The dramatic performance of the event was turned in by Jessy Willard, who started fourth row inside and finished second. Whitey Folk was third, Scott Daniels fourth, and Casey Jesseph fifth.

May the 16th, the NCRA Modifieds come to The Hummer, along with a full slate of regular racing.
