Another night of fast paced action took place Sunday night on the well prepared track surface of Double-X Speedway. Track promoter, Kyle Wirts, stated that it has been a fun season and he is glad to offer fans an economical 'stay-cation' option. Scheduling Winged Outlaw Warrior shows and offering a few 'extras' such as the Ozark Mountain Midgets give people more bang for their buck without leaving the state. For example, next Sunday fans can compare three sizes of sprint cars as the OMM's will return and local boys Brock and Bailey Elliott will demonstrate their quarter midget sprint cars. Our mid-week show on July 3 will kick off the holiday weekend with the fan favorite W.O.W. sprints. Wirts continued that Double-X strives to maintain a family environment including low admission.

Sunday Night Thunder saw an intense street stock feature along with fantastic finishes in the hobby stock and winged sprint features. The evening started with an oversized field of street stocks forming three strong heats with Tim Cressley and Jim Wheatley, both of Tipton, winning the first two heats and California's John Clancy Jr. winning the third. All street stock entries were present for the main event staging a massive line-up and several complete restarts. Once underway, Ted Welschmeyer of Tebbetts shot to the lead with Tipton's Greg Holdren close behind. A mishap on lap six sent Welschmeyer to the tail leaving Holdren the top spot with Clancy in second and Jefferson City's Curtis Turpin a close third. Holdren continued to hold off Clancy as the focus was diverted to third place. Eight starting Harlan Dowell of Tipton had 'snaked' his way through the pack to steal third from Turpin and eventually second from Clancy. With one lap to go and Dowell on Holdren's tail a caution sent Dowell to the rear. With determination, skill, and a bit of luck Holdren found himself in victory lane for the first time this season. Clancy settled for second while Turpin and Welschmeyer finished third and fourth respectively. Chris Miller of Latham finished fifth on his first night in a 'new ride'. Commenting on the win Holdren said, "It felt really good! There have been a lot of problems so far this year and it just felt good to finally get one." He also stated that cautions and other distractions made it hard to stay focused and that it got a little rough for awhile but he was thrilled with the outcome. Top five in points are Dowell 451, Clancy 423, Turpin 403, Cressley 377, Holdren 300.

The hobby stocks had a good night with minimal cautions. Heat winners were Krissi Herrbach of Eldon and Sedalia's young star Jeremy Gordon. Mike Schrader of Sedalia grabbed the lead of the feature with Kyle Smith of Stover close behind. The lead soon changed as Shrader retired to the pits leaving the lead for Smith and Jeremy Gordon in second. California's A.J. Wirts held off Krissi Herrbach for third as Gordon took the lead. In one lap Herrbach moved into second while Wirts overtook Smith for third. Gordon was first to the finish line followed by Herrbach, Wirts, Kim Rimel of California and Smith. Top five in points are Gordon 477, Herrbach 441, Schrader 427, Wirts 379, Bridget Clifford 341.

The winged sprint class started the night one car short as Rex Combs of Tipton flipped his sprinter during hot laps leaving him parked for the night. However, that void was filled when latecomer Tyler Blank, California, appeared at the track during the heat races. Blank started the feature at the tail and secured his second place point position. Heat race winners were Sedalia's Jonathan Cornell and Curtis Evans of Norborne. The main event began with Russellville's Ryan Marsch jetting to the lead leaving Mitchell Moore of Edgerton KS and Cornell to duel for second. Before the halfway point Cornell passed Moore and secured a feature victory leaving Marsch to settle for second. John Hillman of Jefferson City moved up to finish third while Michael White of LaMonte and Curtis Evans battled for fourth with Evans eventually taking over. Point leaders are Cornell 447, Tyler Blank 365, Evan Martin 329, Curtis Evans 328, Curtis Boyer 292.

Barb Whittle sang the National Anthem & David Hoellering gave the invocation. Kirsten and Kelsey Rousch of California presented trophies for Show-Me Asphalt. Race Kids were Riley Hudson, Dawson Lewis, and Johnna Dowell.

Next Sunday the OMM Topless Midgets will return. Gates open at 5:00, hot laps at 7:00, racing begins at 7:30. For race information call 573-796-4694
