Matt Kenseth, one of NASCAR’s top Sprint Cup Series drivers and a Wisconsin native, will race at Iowa Speedway this season. Kenseth, driving for Roush Fenway Racing, will join 2008 NASCAR points leader Kyle Busch and others in the Sunday, July 20th ASA Midwest Tour Super Late Models race.
Iowa Speedway President Jerry Jauron said the July race may be one of best races at Iowa Speedway this season, “We’re thrilled to have two of the top young NASCAR Cup Series drivers competing against each other, as well as a large field of drivers, this summer. It gives fans an opportunity to see world-class drivers here in Iowa and it should be a very competitive race”.
Kenseth won the NASCAR Cup Series championship in 2003 and is ranked 11th in this year’s points standings after a 10th place finish at Bristol. Kenseth, from Cambridge, Wisconsin, honed his craft winning Late Model track championships at such venues as Madison International Speedway and Wisconsin International Raceway. At 19 he became the youngest driver to win in the ARTGO Challenge Series -- once held by Mark Martin-- and in 1994 became the youngest to win the Miller Genuine Draft National championships.
After stints in the Hooters Pro Cup Series and the ASA, Kenseth drove in the Nationwide Series. In 1998, Kenseth posted three Nationwide Series wins and had 17 top-fives and 23 top-10s to finish second in points. He followed that with a third-place ranking in '99, his last full slate on the Nationwide circuit. Kenseth made his Cup debut in September 1998, filling in for Bill Elliott and driving the No. 94 Ford to a sixth-place finish at Dover. He finished fourth at Dover a year later in the third of five races in the No. 17 Roush Fenway Racing Ford. His first victory came in 2000 in the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
This is the first year for the ASA Midwest Tour super late model race at Iowa Speedway. The
150 lap race may have as many as forty cars entered, according to track officials. It will be staged in back-to-back 75 lap segments and follows a 50 lap ARCA Lincoln Welder’s Truck Series race.
