DeFrance and Graham shine at Iowa State Fairgrounds
Des Moines, IA - May 20, 2006
By: David Wilkinson
On the sixth night of racing at the Iowa State Fair Speedway Friday, there was a combination of repeat and new winners. Returning to the winner’s circle were Pat Graham, IMCA modified; Bill Bonnett, IMCA hobby stock; Carl Moyer, Cookies BBQ truck series; and Ryan Lundy, IMCA SportMod. First-time winners this season were Darrell DeFrance, IMCA late model; Randy Killen, IMCA stock car; and John Yaw Sr., IMCA hobby stock.
A scary accident occurred on the track prior to hot laps and racing. Promoter Mick Trier, on a golf cart checking on the condition of the track, accidentally turned in front of a water truck that was packing the track. The golf cart rolled. Trier drove himself to the hospital and returned to the track before the features began. He suffered cuts to his face along with other bumps and bruises.
First row starters took the early lead in the IMCA late model feature with Randy Faux in front on the first lap with Robert See leading laps two through seven. On the eighth lap, Darrell DeFrance passed See and had a front straightaway lead when he took the checkered. Ryan Griffith finishes second with See in third and Faux running fourth.
The IMCA modified feature opened with a caution on each of the first four laps and then ran without interruption to the finish. Glen Gladson led the first two laps with Todd Inman overtaking Gladson on lap three. On the tenth lap of the 15-lap race, Pat Graham pulled aside Inman in turn one and the two ran side-by-side down the backstretch into turn three. By the time they reached the start-finish line, Graham was ahead. He led the field to the checkered with Inman second, Greg Cox third, and Gladson finished fourth.
The evening concluded with a great IMCA stock car race featuring one of the Killen-Jackson battles that are famous at the speedway. This one had a bit of a twist as it involved two Killens, instead of just “Heavy Duty” Don Killen. His son Randy Killen jumped into the lead at the start of race from his second row starting spot. By the second lap, Don Killen moved into second and was chasing his son. Steve Jackson, who started in the sixth row, was in third by the third lap, but a distance behind the Killens. On restarts later in the race, Jackson tried to overtake Don Killen low, but was squeezed and ran out of track. On lap nine, Jackson was able maneuver his way past Killen and pursued Randy Killen. Jackson closed on Killen in the corners, but Killen had a bit more speed between the corners. Randy Killen beat Jackson to the finish by two car lengths with Don Killen running third and Steve Hill fourth.
Carl Moyer passed Mike Hoffman halfway through the Cookies BBQ truck series main and repeated his win of the previous week. Hoffman finished second, Bill Davis Jr. ran third, and Matt Waugh captured fourth. Bret Moyer, who was chastised in his heat race for not responding to a black flag, slowed down during the feature when the black was thrown for the truck of Rick Clark which appeared to be on fire. Officials indicated he should keep racing and he did, finishing seventh.
Ryan Lundy led all ten laps of the IMCA SportMod feature taking his third win of the season. Jacob Murray ran second, Rick Gladson third, and Kyle Wahlert was fourth.
John Yaw Sr. passed leader Jeff Hovick on the second lap of the first IMCA hobby stock main. Yaw led all the way to the yellow-checkered for the victory. Greg Hower ended the race in second with Kyle Webb third and Bruce Wolfe fourth. In the second hobby feature, Kirk Brown went high in turn four of lap eight, allowing Bill Bonnett to overtake him for the lead. Bonnet picked up his third win of the year with Bill Dawson in second, Brown third and Adam Bonnett in fourth.
Racing continues next Friday evening featuring IMCA late models, modifieds, hobby stocks, SportMods, and Cookies BBQ Truck Series. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:00 PM with racing following.
